The history of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Hiroshima University dates back to April 1929, when the Hiroshima Bunrika University was founded, and the Department of Chemistry has been a part of that institution since its inception.

Later, when Hiroshima University was founded in May 1949, the Department of Chemistry, School of Science, was established. In 2019, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Department of Chemistry grandly.
As for the graduate school, with the establishment of the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering in 2020, the Department of Chemistry in the Graduate School of Science has been reorganized into the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Basic Chemistry Program.

The Department of Chemistry, the School of Science, currently consists of 14 laboratories, each promoting distinctive and world-leading research. The research fields include organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, solid state chemistry, physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, biochemistry, radiochemistry, etc., covering almost all basic chemical fields.
Chemistry is the study of molecules and atoms, and since everything that exists around us is composed of molecules and atoms, there is no end to the number of subjects that can be studied.
Chemical phenomena in the world are caused by a combination of various factors, and understanding and controlling them is extremely difficult.

The chemistry studied and researched in the Department of Chemistry, the School of Science, emphasizes the importance of “why” and “how.” The intellectual desire to understand the essence of various chemical phenomena is the driving force behind our research and education.
We believe that this will ultimately lead to the development of the next generation and the construction of a sustainable society.
